This is CBS I In The World. I'm John Datcher with my colleague, Anatole Leven, the

Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, watching the Pregozon events and the aftermath.

Much rumor in Moscow, however, it's important to look to NATO now because the way the great

author of the drama we're living has written the Palais. NATO's chiefs are gathering at

Vilnius within driving distance of the Belarusian frontier in these next days. The gathering

is to look forward to not only Ukraine conflict, but what are the obligations, what are the

plans for a long contest with the Russian Federation? And until what are you watching for

from NATO? Because you and your colleagues have written of the necessity of embassy in

some fashion, reach out some fashion. There's certainly a lot of voices within NATO who

can call up Moscow and have a conversation. There are other voices that that might be

unacceptable politics. But what can NATO do? What can you imagine NATO can do between now

and the meeting in Vilnius? Well, I would imagine that there will be commitments to long

term and serious military aid and training to Ukraine. And there will be yet again vague promises

of NATO membership at some point in future. But if you look at the meeting that has just

occurred of EU leaders in Brussels, they have expressed a willingness or desire to make

future security commitments to Ukraine. But they remain vague. And there was something I have

to say which did rather amuse me. That they said that they were also pledged the possibility

of EU military missions to Ukraine if the conditions for it were deemed suitable and such a step

was agreed by all members. What that means is, well, that if it was completely and totally

safe to send NATO EU officers to Ukraine after the war, the EU would consider doing that.

And certainly there will be countries, you know, the same countries within NATO which will

very much take that extremely cautious line. I mean, in the end, it's a question of, you know,
