This is CBSI on the World. I'm John Batch with Andrea Sturker and Richard Goldberg of

the Foundation for the Defense of Democracy, is writing at the dispatch about the eve

of an IAEA meeting that will make decisions about Iran's bad acting with its suspect

nuclear weapons program. Andrea, there is a tool. It's called Snapback. We've got a few

minutes here. How does it work if it's to be used to punish Iran for its bad acting?

Thank you, John. So what Rich and I are recommending at the IAEA meetings, first step is to

give Iran an ultimatum. Come to their end of compliance with their obligations under

the nuclear non-proliferation treaty by a set deadline, or they would face referral to

the UN Security Council for sanctions. So if Iran didn't comply with his ultimatum,

then the IAE Board would refer the case to the UNSC, where the UK, France, or Germany

could trigger the reimposition of UN sanctions against Iran that remain in sort of a limbo

zombie state under the nuclear deal they remained lifted, even though no one is abiding by

the nuclear deal anymore. The Snapback would restore the UN arms embargo on Iran and prevent

them from importing or exporting military goods, critical in light of the Ukraine invasion

and their army of Russia. It would also stop the lifting of the UN missile embargo in

October of this year when Iran will be able to illegally send missiles and drones to Russia

for use against Ukrainian civilians. And then it would restore the international demand

that Iran halt all its enrichment-related activities. And what's interesting about the way

the Snapback works is that the deal party structured the accord and it's implementing

UN resolution so that Russia and China could not actually use their UNSC vetoes to stop

the Snapback of sanctions against Iran, because all of them would have to vote to keep the

sanctions lifted if one of the parties triggered the Snapback. So within 30 days, we could have
