Summary

On this off-beat, surprisingly aligned episode, Ginny sits down with producer Brennan McPherson to unpack Light of the World—a hand-drawn, theater-released animated feature that tells the life of Jesus through the eyes of a teenage John. Brennan shares how a small nonprofit rallied 400 artists over four years to make a reverent, funny, deeply human film that families can actually enjoy together—because the goal isn’t more screen time, it’s real-life connection. From the historically plausible ages of the disciples to Studio-Ghibli-level visual care, the film becomes a coming-of-age story about courage, friendship, and choosing the harder right—exactly the kind of conversations we want after a night at the movies. See showtimes or grab tickets here: lightoftheworld.com. Brennan also shares the project’s heartbeat: using beauty and simplicity to move people off devices and into embodied relationships. You’ll hear how his family’s six-line “Salvation Poem”—now translated into 100+ languages—became a memorable tool kids (and parents) can keep in their back pocket (salvationpoem.com). If your home values time outdoors, creativity, and the kind of stories that linger on the walk back to the car, this conversation will meet you right where you live. I'm the founder of 1000 Hours Outside. I've just seen a wonderful movie. I want to talk about the backstory here because we always talk about how when kids are outside,

0:41.9

we talk about how they're outside in God's creation.

0:44.2

This is helping with their creativity and coming up with new things.

0:48.9

And I have, I guess you call yourself a producer.

0:52.5

Is that what you call it?

0:53.4

Brennan McPherson, the movie is called Light of the World, and it is coming out the day this podcast goes live. It's two days from now. Brennan, welcome. Thank you. Glad to be here. And, you know, funny enough, but behind, so the ministry that's behind Light of the World, the film, we're a nonprofit and we create all sorts of media.

1:12.4

Their whole goal with media is to use media to capture people's attention and get them into physical relationship, to get them off screens out of a cycle where they're caught in a device and in real relationship with real people in real life.

1:26.0

So, kudos.

1:26.9

I love it. I love it. It's very aligned.

1:28.3

Okay, I would love to know your path here. So obviously you're this creative person and you're coming out and this is a really unique situation. You said you're self-distributing light of the world. And even so, self-distributing, it's going to 26 different countries. I'm always curious with people's backstories because I would have no

1:46.0

idea how to get to where you are today. Yeah, four years ago, I had no experience in the film

1:52.6

industry. And so it was trial by fire. So our nonprofit, our founder came to me and John Schaefer,

1:59.3

who was one of the two directors. And it was just the two of us and one other guy at the nonprofit at the time. He said, I think we're called to make a film on the Life of Jesus, and it should be animated. Go figure it out. And we're like, okay, well. So it was kind of a responsibility just thrust onto us that we had a steward. And so we figured out, well, how does this

2:18.8

fit into us as a nonprofit? Our core mission is to craft stories to share Jesus with the world. We're

2:23.8

like very, very much Christian, Jesus-centric explicitly, but we're artists. We're nerdy artists.

2:31.2

And so it's all about doing that in a variety of different

2:35.0

mediums. And so it was a natural fit for us. And John was previously the lead producer of

2:40.6

CBN's Superbook series, the revamp version, produced every single episode there. So he had

2:46.1

experience in animation, and particularly in biblical adaptation animation for a global audience.
