Summary

Youth sports have evolved from casual neighborhood games to a multi-billion-dollar industry where kids are often treated as commodities. In this episode, Brian Smith and Ed Uszynski, authors of Away Game: A Christian Parent’s Guide to Navigating Youth Sports, delve into how today’s sports culture is pressuring kids to perform rather than enjoy play. They reflect on the rise of elite programs, the loss of amateurism, and the overwhelming influence of money on what was once a simple, joyful part of childhood. With raw honesty, they discuss the impact of this commercialization on kids’ mental health, relationships, and desire to continue participating in sports. As parents, we are often caught in a cycle of pushing our kids to be the best, sometimes at the expense of their happiness and self-worth. Brian and Ed share the “silent killer” of kids’ love for sports— the dreaded car ride home after the game, where criticism often replaces celebration. They discuss why it's crucial to shift the focus from winning at all costs to fostering character, emotional resilience, and healthy self-expression. Tune in for a thought-provoking conversation about reclaiming joy, the importance of play, and how we, as parents, can break free from the youth sports industrial complex to allow our children to truly thrive. Welcome to 1,000 Hours Outside Podcast. My name is Ginny Urich. I'm the founder of 100 Hours Outside,

0:05.0

and I have some fantastic guests today that are going to be talking about something that we are

0:09.3

almost all dealing with, which is youth sports, the youth sports culture. Brian Smith and Ed

0:14.7

Uzinski are here. Welcome. Thanks for having us, Jenny. It's Jenny. Okay, Ed is a total

0:20.5

trooper because he's sitting in his car because there's no power in Ohio. There was just some major storms. So, Ed, thank you for your commitment. I hope it works. I hope it keeps working. It is working. So you have a book coming out and it will be out by the time this podcast goes live. It's called Away Game, a Christian

0:37.5

parents guide to navigating youth sports. And this is a fantastic book. Now, I am not sporty. I did

0:43.4

like a swim team until I was like seven and pretty much that's it. So it's not part of my world,

0:50.1

but it is a part of your world when you become a parent. And it's just a part of culture, like this pressure for sports, sports, sports.

0:56.8

And I have read a few books about sports, even though, you know, it's not really like my thing.

1:03.3

And I have a love of them.

1:04.9

I read Linda Flanagan's book, Take Back the Game.

1:07.3

And I read a book called Beyond Winning by Kim John Payne and Luis Fernando Yosa. And what I

1:12.8

found is that these books really reveal a lot about human nature. They help you learn what to do

1:19.5

in stressful situations. Like I was reading your book Away Game and I was about to go speak at a conference.

1:24.6

And I was like, this is helping me. This is helping me. And it also points you

1:27.8

to what really matters. I have surprisingly really gotten so much out of these books that are

1:32.7

geared toward talking about sports because really the themes are very overarching. So I would love

1:38.7

to start here. Sports have changed. And in this book away game, you go through the history of that.

2:02.3

You talk about how it used to be. It was like the entry fee was small and the parents maybe were there. They weren't there. It didn't matter. You did it in your local community. You came and you loved it. And then, you know, it was over and you played with your friends for the rest of the summer. Can you talk about what changed in a little bit of the why?

2:08.2

Yeah, and we devote a whole chapter. This actually, it's one of my favorite chapters to write just because I love thinking about how change happens in culture because the current sport

2:14.3

culture could have never existed 100 years ago in America.

2:18.5

You know, there was just a number of interlocking threads that took place.
