This afternoon, the final regular season game for the 1974 campaign,

USC and Notre Dame, in a renewal of one of college football's most storied rivalries.

Since 1926, with the exception of three war years in the 40s,

the Trojans and the Irish have met, and as it is with most of the Notre Dame opponents,

the Irish have an edge, 26 victories, 15 losses, four ties.

But the Trojans, under present head coach and athlete director John McKay, have more than held their own against the Irish.

McKay is 6-6-2 with Notre Dame.

He's four wins, a loss, and two ties in games since 1966, which, incidentally, was the year that Notre Dame beat the Trojans 51-0

and the last time Notre Dame has won a game here at the Coliseum.

I know there are people sitting in most every location here at the Coliseum.

There are a lot of empty seats around this huge football stadium.

The temperature, not quite up to 70 here prior to kickoff.

And it is an overcast day, though, rain was not at all mentioned in the forecast coming up to this game.

It is a very overcast day.

I doubt, though, if there'll be any showers.

This is not really the last game of the year for these two clubs.

Notre Dame is going to the Orange Bowl against Alabama, the tokens to the road

bowl against Ohio State and the roar below.
