Summary

As of this podcast release, Pluvicto is officially FDA-approved for stage 4 prostate cancer without the need for chemo first! At the time of this recording, it was not yet approved. But it is now officially approved, providing access to more people!  In today’s episode, Andy, a stage four prostate cancer patient, shares his experience undergoing three Theranostics treatments. Joining us is Lynn Hiestand, a registered nurse who has been guiding Andy through his journey. Together, we discuss what Theranostics is, how it works, and the impact it’s had on Andy’s health. Here are three takeaways:  Theranostics vs. Traditional Chemotherapy: Unlike chemotherapy, which affects both cancerous and healthy cells, Theranostics specifically targets cancer cells, reducing side effects like hair loss and nausea. This leads to a better quality of life for patients. Andy described feeling "weird" during chemotherapy but much better with Theranostics, calling it a game-changer.  Accessibility and Insurance Challenges: Insurance coverage for Theranostics varies, making access difficult for some patients. Lynn emphasizes the need for self-advocacy and exploring options, including international clinics. This discussion is crucial for those navigating cancer treatment.  The Importance of Education and Awareness: Both Andy and Lynn emphasize the need for greater awareness and education about Theranostics among healthcare professionals and patients alike. Many doctors may not be familiar with this treatment, which can lead to missed opportunities for patients seeking alternatives to traditional therapies. By sharing stories like Andy's and discussing the benefits of Theranostics, we can help spread the word and potentially save lives. Tune in now to learn more!  Bio: Lynn Hiestand holds a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Brigham Young University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from East Tennessee State University. She began her healthcare career at the Nevada Fertility Center, where she worked as a registered nurse and patient coordinator, guiding patients through fertility treatments—particularly frozen embryo transfers—and helping them realize their dreams of becoming parents. In her current role with Privado Health, Lynn serves as both an RN and a patient coordinator/nurse navigator. She is dedicated to helping prostate cancer patients understand and access theranostic treatment options, providing compassionate support and guidance at every step. Lynn’s commitment to patient care, combined with her clinical expertise, makes her an invaluable resource in delivering effective, personalized treatment plans for those facing cancer. 1:22.8

explain to the listeners in case they missed that episode with Chad, what Theranostics is and how it works

1:29.5

as a cancer treatment? Yeah, sure. So Theranostics is a targeted treatment for cancer that

combines imaging and therapy to diagnose and treat cancer. So the medication is made up of a radio tracer, which is a radioactive isotope

1:48.0

that's paired with a carrier molecule. So this travels directly to your cancer cells and binds to a

biomarker that's on those cancer cells. So there's essentially two parts to the medication.

2:01.8

There's this radioactive part, and then this carrier molecule that acts kind of like a tracking
