34 years ago, SMU and CCU played for the national title and a bit to the Rose Bowl.

Bobby Wilson and the SMU Mustang prevailed in that rich classic by a 20 to 14 score.

SMU then played in the Rose Bowl and lost 7 to nothing to Stanford.

DCU, led by Sammy Ball, went to the sugar, a rudder, yeah, the Sugar Bowl, and defeated LSU by the unlikely score of three to two.

Both of today's participants will also go bowling, of course, on New Year's Day, the winner to the Cotton Bowl, the loser to the Sugar Bowl.

Everything is geared for victory today in Razorback Stadium. No player, nor coach, nor fans, has remotely considered the

possibility of a tie, what with all the sakes. But even though Texas and Arkansas have never

played to a tie in 50 previous games, let's just suppose for a moment. Suppose today's match is

all deadlock when the final whistle blows. What's then?

Well, for one thing, the two teams will have for themselves, like it or not, another Southwest Conference co-championship, an honor they shared last year.

But it will also mean that Arkansas will become the host team against Notre Dame in the

Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas, while Texas meets Mississippi in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

And a tie might well carry with it a commotion of start, thus depriving both teams of a chance at the mythical national championship.

Depending the bowl games, the Southwest Conference champion automatically goes to the Cockham Bowl.

In the case of a tie for the championship, the team that beat the other in regular season

play gets the official invitation, such as was the case last year when Texas beat Arkansas.

But in the event of a tie caused by a tie game between the coach champion, the team that

last played in the cotton bowl is eliminated.

And since Texas played their last New Year's Day, Arkansas would get the nod this coming January in case of the time.

The cheers are for the Arkansas Razorbacks, as they're being introduced individually to the crowd here at Razorback Stadium.

A tremendous roar going up at the end of each introduction, the loudest call perhaps of all time,
