Hi, everybody, this is Jim Morris with Frank Sweeney at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois.

Now these two teams have met, not met, I should say, since 1946,

when Notre Dame led by such greats as Emil Cynchow, Johnny Lujack, and Terry Brennan,

defeated the

Illini by the score of 26 to 6. Illinois went on that same year to a record of 8 and 2,

won the conference title, and whipped UCLA in the Rose Bowl 4514. Illinois has never defeated

a Notre Dame team. The record shows nine wins for the fighting Irish and a scoreless tie.

For this game, Notre Dame hopes to bounce back after the lost last week to number one ranked

Southern Cal. The Irish are in better physical shape than a week ago. Kevin Hardy, the All-American

defensive tackle, appears to be 100% again, and most of the Irish are healthy except for minor bruises.

However, Dan Harchman and Mike Berkner will not play and Ron Dushney is questionable. Illinois will be

without the services of first-string quarterback Bob Napanik. His replacement, McDeen

Bothman has been adequate but the Illini have had problems moving to ball. However, opponents

have had trouble moving against the Illinois However, opponents have had trouble moving against

the Illinois defense, which is led by linebackers Dave Tomasula and Terry Miller. Tomasula was

voted lineman of the week for his play against the Minnesota golfers a week ago. The weather

here beautiful, sunny and cool temperature 59 degrees. The wind is from the north-northwest at 15 miles per hour,

and it seems to be a little faster than that down on the field could be a factor this afternoon.
