Well Father Bonaventure, here we are for a, you know, a very light-hearted

episode. I think that when you start talking about penance, that's what everyone feels inside right all the warm

cuddly the warm fuzzies yeah yeah that's right maybe not with the beatings

internal yeah then well you know there's a sort of warmth to beat my back is dealing you know yeah that's

right exactly yeah yeah we take turns well mortification I suppose yes was

it a part of Dominican tradition in general most religious traditions although obviously people take, people have weird pictures

of what it was, but, and it's something that we haven't brought back quite yet, but penances

are a form of mortification and the part of the Christian life.

So I think it's worth fair game worth talking about.

An ancient tried and true practice, right?

Well as we open the episode, are there any penances that you've undertaken in your life that have been outrageous or maybe particularly difficult?

No, no outrageous penances.

I remember when we were going through our course on

confession and you got to look at some of the old manuals, the old penance manuals that

from the Irish, I assume they were Irish because of were Irish because of Irish Catholics and such.

But there were penances like pilgrimage to Rome, the crawling up, you know, places on your knees.

And there was one where you like to spend a night,

spend a night in either graveyard or like with a dead body,

...
