When we left off last week, the Vikingers had established fortified bases in Ireland.

Not only that, but after building the bases, they decided to hang out there for the winter.

Choosing to stay in the relatively warmer climbs of the British Isles, then returning

home to freeze in the long northern nights.

Much like with the occupation of Orchney, the Vikingers turned their new lands into essentially

a launching pad for their attacks on the rest of the islands.

That's important because by taking and holding territory that will be valuable for them

for further campaigns, we're seeing the Scandinavian Raiders planning for the future,

a southern future.

At about the same time that that happened, so at about 840, we read that King Athe Wolf

of Wessex had yet another son, which would make this his fifth child, and the boy was named

Ethel Red.

Apparently King Ethel Red and Osbergo were really into each other because they were cranking
