I love HGTV. It’s easy to get hooked watching JoJo and Chip Gaines on “Fixer Upper” transform an old ranch home into something SPECTACULAR (with shiplap of course!), and I’m always picking up little tips that I can DIY along the way.
Because sometimes DIY is best.
A professional web designer or developer isn't always the answer.
And neither is a seasoned copywriter or Facebook ad consultant.
Here’s the truth: You’re an entrepreneur.
Which means, by nature, you’re a DIYer.
In fact, you probably started your business because you knew you could do something better yourself. You’re likely great at wearing many hats—owner, marketer, writer, developer, etc. AND, you may have to do things yourself for awhile because you don’t have a big team or a big budget (yet!).
I’m here to say, “You’re on the right track!”
I think there are some things you just have to DIY, especially when you’re a rookie entrepreneur. In the long run, your business and your tribe will be better off for it.
BUT, there aren’t enough hours in the day, week or month for you to do every single thing yourself. So these are the five things I believe are crucial for you to take on in the beginning:
null of these might seem like small potatoes—and they’re not—but I’ve got some resources below to help ease the learning curve.
Also, hang out with me until the end and I will answer the question that crosses every entrepreneur’s mind on this topic: How long do I need to keep doing these things myself?

0:00.0 | Your listening to the online marketing made easy podcast episode number 171. |
0:08.0 | Welcome to the online marketing made easy podcast business advice so easy you'll feel like you're cheating and now your host Amy Porterfield. |
0:19.0 | Hey there Amy Porterfield here and welcome to another episode of the online marketing made easy podcast today we are diving into the areas that you should DIY in your business when you're just starting out. |
0:43.0 | Now I want to be up front with you because some of what I'm going to share today may be a little bit tough to hear but here's the thing I always want to be honest with you my goal is to help you build your business and move it forward and I want to make your online marketing easy and part of making online marketing easy is outsourcing for sure I've talked about it on my show many times and I've also talked about finding the right people in your business to help you get the most |
1:13.0 | important projects done most recently I shared how I found hired and work with my project manager that was episode number 159 I'm all about finding the right people for your team and I truly do believe that you can leverage many different tasks in your business but I also know that when you're just starting out there are areas that should be left to only one person in your business. |
1:43.0 | And that is you. Now let me back up for just a moment because the entire idea of this episode came after I was talking to one of my good friends who also happens to be a project manager and she was just breaking into Facebook ads in her business she's just getting her business up and running and she started to do some webinars and so of course she wants to run some Facebook ads and so the conversation went something like this I said oh how are you going to do this? |
2:12.0 | I said oh how are your Facebook ads going tell me all about it are you filling up your webinar and my friend said well we were having some challenges we weren't getting as many people on the webinar so my Facebook ads girl changed some things around she tweaked some some stuff inside the power editor and we're good to go. |
2:32.0 | I said to her well what exactly did she tweak what did she change to get better results and my friend said I have no idea and that is a no go when you are just starting out in your business because my friend didn't even have the foundation of Facebook ads she was trusting somebody else with one of the most important areas of her business now I'll talk more about my friend later in this episode and what all of my friends are doing. |
3:02.0 | I'm ultimately happened but the reason I'm making this specific episode is because no one knows your business better than you and when you're just starting out you're truly making distinctions and choices and coming up with different ideas that shape where your business is going. |
3:21.0 | So in the beginning you need to invest your own time your own resources into learning the different aspects that can move the needle in your business now I'm going to talk about five of those areas today why you need to do it yourself in that area and then some points to keep in mind oh and at the end I will answer the question that's very likely on your mind well how long should I actually do it myself before I actually. |
3:51.0 | I'm not an outsource or before I hire somebody else to do this on my team yes I will answer that question for sure so before we dive in a quick word about our sponsor. |
4:03.0 | Let's talk about fresh books now I agree to sing their praises not just because they're the number one cloud accounting software for freelancers but more so because they just rebuilt their entire platform and they help freelancers get paid faster so now you can create and send branded invoices in just seconds you can set yourself up. |
4:20.0 | You can set yourself up to get paid in just two clicks and you can see when someone actually views your invoice no more guessing so to get your free unrestricted trial all you need to do is go to fresh books calm forward slash Amy and in that section where it says where did you hear about us just type in online marketing made easy enjoy. |
4:41.0 | Okay so let's dive into DIY the most important aspects of your business we're going to start with the big guns your website I know I know it could feel incredibly intimidating to actually create your website on your own but I'll tell you this it's incredibly doable and here's one thing I know for sure. |
5:03.0 | So many of my peers and myself this has happened to me as well early on building our business we hired somebody to build our website for us and we spent way too much money and way too much time on our website and we could have done it ourselves and then focused on other areas of our business that would start making us money faster. |
5:28.0 | Now the reason we spent way too much money and way too much time with somebody doing our website for us was because we didn't know truly what we needed and what we wanted and what our audience needed from us as well when you're just starting out there are so many unanswered questions and until you start blogging regularly or creating your weekly podcast or your weekly video show until you start building your social media. |
5:58.0 | So you can see that you have a lot of presence building your email list and connecting with your ideal customer avatar you will really have no clear vision for your own platform your website and so until you get in the trenches a little bit more I say create something simple and do it yourself. |
6:19.0 | Back in the day when I worked on my website one thing that was a very different than today is that there weren't as many really amazing WordPress themes and so I remember spending days and days and days maybe weeks trying to figure out which theme would work best for my business. |
6:41.0 | These days I feel like you have so many great options and so many WordPress themes are drag and drop Jessica Ray who designed my current website was talking to me recently about encouraging people to DIY their website and she said the technology is way easier than it's ever been and that's one reason why she feels that it is incredibly doable to actually work on your website yourself. |
7:09.0 | Now remember I'm saying when you're just starting out because when you do it yourself you won't add all those crazy bells and whistles that tend to get most people in trouble with their website in terms of spending too much time and too much money. |
7:23.0 | Remember you're just going to keep it simple you're going to think about your overall strategy and when people come to your website what do you want them to do and also how are you going to grow your email list with your website. |
7:36.0 | I'd rather you spend more time on focusing on really great core lead magnet for your website that you put on the homepage like in that feature box across the top before the fold by the way so many WordPress themes now offer that feature box functionality where you can put your freebie front and center on your homepage. |
