Rafe is interested in human movement training and parkour. Evolve Move Play “reconnects people to the most meaningful aspects of life and helps them cultivate their character through outdoor movement training with online courses, classes, and retreats.” Rafe comes from a more scientific perspective and has been in conversation with people like John Vervaeke and Paul VanderKlay (https://youtu.be/0p47jSSYXZk). This interview is an attempt to bridge the gap between the symbolic, or mythological, worldview and Rafe’s more materialist presuppositions. We talk about the reemergence of the religious spirit (“re-enchantment), social justice, BLM and veganism etc, the role religion has played evolutionarily, the problem of inclusion and exclusion in group identity, the work of Jonathan Haidt, spirituality, emergence and emanation, the universalist position and much more. This is Jonathan Peugeot the chance to speak to you.

0:29.0

I've been absorbing a lot of your work over the last week, and I've gotten a lot out of it.

0:33.1

It's been really interesting.

0:34.7

So I wanted to start with this question of what does it mean to say

0:39.2

that the world is becoming re-enchanted? Well, first of all, it's great to, it's great to meet you.

0:45.2

I understand that we have met before slightly. So it's good to, it's good to kind of meet you again.

0:49.8

And I have also been interested in the kind of stuff you're doing in terms of parkour and everything.

0:55.6

My son is really into parkour.

0:57.8

So that's kind of what prompted me to say, oh, yeah, I should talk to this guy because I do find.

1:01.8

I always find if I'd been younger, I would have definitely been into parkour, like, you know, just a little younger.

1:06.5

Anyway, so we can totally get you into it.

1:09.0

We'll talk about that after the course.

1:10.1

Yeah, I'm a little old. I'm getting that, getting that permanent little belly. It's not a big belly. It's like the little, anyways. All right. So let's go for it. So what do I mean? The idea is that the, you could say something like the enlightenment, or not just enlightenment, a whole process, historical process of, of, of development,

1:29.1

created the possibility for what we kind of call, you know, materialism or rationalism,

1:34.0

rationalism, rationalism today. And it's, it's basically been a desire to see the stability

1:41.0

of the world in phenomena or manifestation and things that you can quantify,

1:46.7

right? You can calculate, you can quantify, you can count. And my contention is that the reason

1:54.0

why it was able to kind of last is because it was it was trying to remove, let's say,

2:00.1

the mythological aspects of Christianity, but it was still was trying to remove let's say the mythological aspects of Christianity but it was still

2:02.7

surfing on that and so there were still remainders of it or things taken for granted which made

2:08.6

it possible for people to pretend as if that wasn't there and then kind of look at the world just as

2:15.3

phenomena and calculate and quantify but as they were kind of chopping the tree that was holding them up, at some point,
