Summary

Cheri Oz was tired of the cold. When the temperature hit -70 one night, it was time to move. Her trip to Phoenix would put her on a path to working as a police officer and undercover detective with Phoenix PD to heading up the DEA field division in Phoenix as the Special Agent in Charge.

In addition to her law enforcement accomplishments, Cheri also has a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame. A fitting achievement for someone who went from a ball girl for the Chicago White Sox to working undercover against the leader of the Hells Angels to taking down some of the most dangerous members of organized criminal gangs.

So here I am at the airport and I'm working in an addiction which is different than what I'm used to. It's short quick hits and not necessarily long-term investigations.

0:29.0

I stumble upon this gang and that's really what it is. It's a violent criminal streaking that is now working at the Los Angeles International Airport.

0:42.0

And as I start to, and I just came from this gang investigation, so I'm really sensitive and well my skills are I guess primed for this investigation at this time in my life.

And I partner with the airport police at LAX who are outstanding. These guys, they try so hard to keep their airport safe and they work so hard.

And then I had LA Sheriff's Department and LAPD. So I had the best possible crew of people to kind of help me sift through what I thought I was dealing with.

Welcome to Game of Crimes.

1:35.0

Hey everybody, welcome back to part two of this episode with Sherry Oz episode 17. This one's a little bit different because when we dropped the episode on Monday, we had no idea obviously what was going to go on, but kind of tragedy hit Sherry, you know, in the DEA family.

1:58.0

And I know Steve, you've got some information on that. So we just want to take some time, explain to you what was going on before we actually get into the episode.

2:05.0

Right. So first of all, you know, one of our brothers was killed out there. And when I say brothers, I don't just mean DEA. I mean the law enforcement community because we're all brothers and sisters.

2:18.0

And what happened was Monday, the two DE agents and a Tucson police officer was task force officer were doing a train interdiction and Tucson, Arizona.

2:30.0

And that's basically where they go on a train and they just look for anything suspicious because the, you know, if you've ever ridden Amtrak, you don't go through metal detectors or anything, you just show your ID in a ticket and you're on board.

2:42.0

And so they're looking primarily for drugs and money, you know, drug related proceeds, that kind of thing. Well, they approached two guys, unbeknownst to them. One of them was wanted for first degree murder.

2:56.0

So as they're trying to talk to him, he pulls a gun out and he shoots group supervisor, Mike Garbo. He hits him two times in the face and four times in the chest. And this is, I'm going to guess this is probably within about 10 feet or less of each other.

3:11.0

Unfortunately, Agent Garbo died at the scene. The city, the video is on YouTube. You can watch it. You can see the police officers carrying him out and throwing him in the backseat of a cruiser and rushing to the hospital. We didn't survive.

3:25.0

Especially Agent Fox was with him from DEA. He was hit. You know what? I'm sorry. Fox was the one that was shot twice in the face and four in the chest. But he survived. He's in critical condition. Garbo was shot four times in the abdomen.

And then the Tucson police officer was also shot once in the chest and he had grazing wound on his leg. Now the shooter went and barricaded himself in a bathroom. And he died in that bathroom. The last reports I've read, they don't know if it was a self inflicted gunshot wound or the Tucson SWAT team shot him.

3:58.0

The other guy that was with him surrendered and the investigation is going on. But it's, you know, we try to be upbaiting everything when we do our shows here and we want you guys to have fun. We also just want to put this out. Our hearts go out to everybody in DEA to Tucson Police Department. We wish Fox and the TFO speed of recovery is complete full recovery. God bless you, the Garbo family. You're in our prayers.

4:23.0

And we ask our listeners, say a prayer and just keep them all in in mind is horrible when something like this happens. Yeah. And I saw of sherry action. This is what made it personal too. We just got through talking to Sherry. We got a lot of comments about how upbeat she is, you know, how personal she is, but then to see her lead off that press conference talking about, you know, sadly, I can confirm. Yeah, you know, and it's just it's heartbreaking. So we wanted to break this up. Normally I just like I say I do the quick intro, get you into this. But this was special because we recorded the episode.

4:52.0

We dropped it on Monday and then right after we dropped it is when this shooting happened in Tucson. So we didn't want to mix this up with the outro where Steve and I cut up because it just didn't seem appropriate, you know, to mix those things. So we wanted to, you know, make sure that we paid our respects, you know, let everybody know that, hey, policing is a dangerous business. And when you see in that video, too, the one that shows the outside of the train station and you see that officer when the shots fired, he goes running in there. Right.

5:20.0

You know, cops, firefighters, paramedics or if soldiers, you know, are those few people who run towards the sound of gunfire and not a way from it.

5:30.0

That's right. And if you watch that video, you'll see the bad guy. He even comes to the door and fires three rounds at one of the police officers outside. I mean, that guy is wide open. So let's just ended up here by saying God bless all the men and women and law enforcement. Thank you for what you do. Thank you for keeping us safe.

5:47.0

Our prayers go out to you and your families. God bless. Yeah. So let's get into episode 17 part two of Sherry Oz from baseball, Hall of Fame to DEA. And again, we want to separate this stuff, but we did want to be upfront with you guys and let you know, this, this was a tough intro and outro to record based on what happened. So we're going to do our best. And we will soldier on just like they will and God bless the warrior. So stay tuned episode 17 part two coming your way right now.
