Summary

Back in the winter of 1950, The Victory café at 226A Edgware Road in Paddington was managed by 50-year-old Alice Williams; a quiet, nervous but hard-working lady who everyone called ‘Madam’. So respected was Alice, that when a regular customer called June needed her help, she did just that, and put into storage June’s personal belongings and life savings.


Both women trusted one another… but on the Boxing Day of 1950, something made Alice snap. So what should have been a swift transaction, sparked a fight for their lives and ended in death.

own vegetable, mange too. Ewe. But before the original buildings were demolished to make way for the A-40 flyover, on the

ground floor of 266 Edgeware Road, one stood a humble little eatery called the Victory

it was a friendly little place which served simple foods

like tea, coffee, toast and fry-ups.

And being in an era when most people, especially in a city,
