Summary

The Pyramid Texts appear. Around 2410 BCE, a new trend began in royal pyramid building. King Unas initiated something unusual when he introduced hieroglyph texts to the burial chamber of his pyramid. These "Pyramid Texts" are a vast and fascinating body of work. In this episode, we dip our toes into this material, and even see evidence for divine cannibalism... When Jed Kare came to power, the Egyptian political landscape was a very different entity

0:19.1

than it had been 60 years earlier.

1:30.0

When there were more officials scattered throughout the kingdom, any single individual was less important than the whole, and the power of each person was restricted.

1:41.0

To give an example of this, let's turn very briefly to the island of Elefantini, a small community

1:48.4

at the southernmost border of Egypt, which served as a trading station and a guard post against raids from Nubian tribes.

1:57.1

By the 5th Dynasty, Alefantini had developed into a small but valuable administrative and military outpost.

2:04.0

Before Niusare, it was overseen by a small group dominated by an overseer.

2:10.0

After Niusare, up to three or more officials were in residence at once.

2:16.0

One acted as a troop commander, the other acted as an overseer of administrative documents,
