Summary

Joining us on the podcast today are Kolby and Cami, a married couple from Idaho whose life and faith were shaken when their bishop was convicted and sent to prison for sexually abusing children. We discuss the moves the local leadership made that shocked them, including praising the former bishop in front of his victims to the entire ward congregation. This is one of the most important stories that highlight the LDS culture of conforming to authority vs following one’s conscience and the fallout of doing the latter. We applaud Kolby and Cami (and other members of their Idaho stake) for trying to protect children and telling this story today. In part two we’ll be discussing how these events affected their faith in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as a whole.

Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Warm Stories podcast. I'm your host John

0:04.6

Delin. It is so great to have you with us today. We are recording February 17th, 2022.

0:11.0

And as always, I am so thrilled to have with me my partner in goodness and truth and righteousness

0:18.2

Carabarral. Hey, Cara. Hi you. Thanks for joining. Thanks so much for having me. Yeah. Well,

0:24.2

Cara, we've got kind of a intense, important and more serious episode today. So do you have

0:30.9

your cap on for that? I do, but I do have a very like kind of outrageous jacket on that

0:36.2

probably is not setting the tone for what you just said. It's okay. It's okay. We love the jacket.

0:40.6

Thank you. It's a special jacket. All right. Well, today we have kind of a really sensitive

0:46.2

and important topic. The topic for today's episode is when Mormon bishops abused children

0:53.3

and you really, I think in 2022, maybe at least monthly, there's a story that breaks out

0:59.5

where Mormon bishop abuses a parishioner or, you know, a ward member or a child. It has

1:05.9

become very, very common in the news for that to happen. And on the one hand, I don't

1:11.6

think we're trying to say that the Mormon church is the only church where abuse happens

1:15.7

or where leaders abuse. If you just watch the movie spotlight with the Catholic church,

1:19.4

you'll know that like something like crazy, like 11% of their priests have been found

1:24.0

to be abusing children like church clergy abused children sometimes. And it would be impossible

1:30.5

to even really know whether it happens more or less in the Mormon church. But that's

1:34.2

kind of less important. We know what happens. We know it's happening regularly within

1:38.6

Mormonism. We've had several episodes recently about that. But today we're doing something

1:44.3

quite different. Today we have with us Colby and Cammy. Is that right? That's right.

1:50.7

Do you guys want to use your last name? Or your British? Okay. So it's Colby and Cammy

1:55.8

Reddish. They are joining us from Idaho. And the main story today is basically their
