The early months of the Second World War in Europe were an interesting time for the war

at sea. Now, this was not due to

major naval actions like what the Japanese would launch at the start of the war in the Pacific,

but instead due to the scattered actions of the Kriegsmarine and the somewhat frantic

actions of the Royal Navy to answer them. From basically the very beginning of the war,

there would be two trends that would become

apparent, and they would kind of stick around until well into 1941.

The first theme was that the Kriegs Marine never had enough ships, either underwater or

surface ships, to accomplish the goals that they were going for, which was primarily commerce
