Summary

Keir Starmer stood on a platform committing to radical domestic policies associated with the Corbyn era - the so-called 'Ten Pledges' - while promising to turn Labour into an election winning party again. As Britain is ravaged by one of the worst death tolls on earth thanks to the Tories' catastrophic handling of the pandemic - it's time to debate where things stand for Labour at the turn of 2021.

Two of Britain's best left-wing commentators joined me recently live: the journalists Paul Mason and Michael Walker.

Hello, hello, hello, hello to pandemic Britain and beyond. We've got an absolute corker of a show today. If you don't mind, he's saying with some pretty superb excellent guests here. So thank you so much for joining us. I know you have better things to do.

You're probably going to get down the pub, weren't you? What I'm going to do? I'm going to just set the scene first, do a bit of housekeeping and then bring them in. It's going to be a really, really important discussion.

0:31.0

It's been nine months or so since Keir Starmer was elected leader Labour Party after why I think we can all agree was a very, very traumatising electoral defeat.

0:40.0

And for those on the left of the pie who believed in a transformative political project to transform society, you know, we dealt with that terrible electoral catastrophe.

And then during the leadership election, the I suppose the continuity left candidate lost the pandemic ravages this country. We haven't had a lot of time to process or really discuss what's going on in the Labour Party.

1:06.0

We can't meet, of course, in constituency Labour parties, we can't have political meetings and rallies and discussions. And often these chats happen in the pretty feral confines of social media where maybe when we're all a bit stressed and have had maybe one or two to drink myself included.

1:24.0

We always have the most level-headed and thoughtful discussion. So I thought why not have a really thoughtful discussion about whether or not Starmer's Labour Party is failing to oppose the Tories.

1:36.0

There were a lot of people on the left who are very angry with the Labour leadership. There were others who think, come on, actually, a lot of this has been overstated.

1:45.0

But what we're going to talk about is, what is, you know, the vision of Starmerism? Is there one? Has it has it has he kept his commitments, his promises, his pledges?

1:54.0

Because if Starmer was elected in any platform, I'd sum up his this. Keep the the core radical policy perspective of Corbynism, competence, he's less likely to be involved by the media, party unity and being able to take the things Labour Party members believe in into office.

2:15.0

That's why so many people have voted for Corbyn twice voted for him. And that's why he was able to win the leadership. Has he stuck to that? Where's he going? Where's the leadership going wrong? Where's it getting things right?

2:25.0

We're going to talk about this. It's going to be entirely factually based, I promise you, just before I bring them in, just somehow skipping.

2:31.0

So come on, let's just, I mean, I'm just going to set the scene with policies and then I'll bring it. So one of the reasons, as I've said, care was elected.

3:24.0

Care Starmer, sorry, I hate you when people start talking about politicians.

3:27.0

It's okay. No.
