In this episode, I break down how I approach tapering for big efforts, especially an Ironman.
We talk about pulling back volume and intensity without losing fitness, handling the mental itch to keep pushing, and why that restraint actually sets you up to win. I also walk through how I set up my carb load to top off muscle glycogen so I’m not leaving anything on the table.
I share what’s worked, what hasn’t, and the practical strategies I use so you show up on race day.

| 0:00.0 | Hello everyone and welcome back to another episode of the podcast. |
| 0:10.5 | Today is all about tapering. |
| 0:13.6 | How to taper for a race or a competition, as well as how to carbohydrate load in preparation for a race or competition, |
| 0:24.7 | being a big endurance effort. |
| 0:29.5 | Now, I'm in a taper right now for Iron Man, Arizona, which is in three days. |
| 0:36.1 | At the time of this recording, it is Thursday, November 13th, |
| 0:42.3 | 2025. I race this Sunday. I've put in an 18-week prep for Iron Man, Arizona, and it was a big prep. |

| 1:00.4 | Running mileage was between 60 and 65 miles a week. |
| 1:05.4 | I topped out at 65 miles a week, and that was two weeks ago, two or three weeks ago. So it was a big effort. |
| 1:15.5 | There's a lot of training. And I have found over the years with all the different races and |
| 1:21.1 | competitions that I've done that a taper can make a big difference actually. And there's ways to do a taper right. |
| 1:30.1 | There's definitely ways to do a taper wrong. |
| 1:34.2 | But at the end of the day, a taper, which we're going to get into here, |
| 1:38.8 | I'm probably going to say the word taper many, many times starting this episode. |
| 1:44.0 | So just be prepared for that. But a taper is very |
| 1:49.9 | specific to an individual, but even more so, it is specific to the prep. If you put in a huge block of training |
| 2:02.5 | and you've accumulated a lot of volume, |
| 2:05.5 | intensity, you're carrying a lot of fatigue, |
| 2:08.3 | the taper is going to be more important |
| 2:10.8 | and more beneficial |
| 2:12.8 | as opposed to if you just put |
