Summary

Have you ever found yourself reacting in unhelpful ways to the distress that accompanies a religious faith crisis (or life in general)?

Margi Dehlin has spent two decades supporting and/or coaching Mormons in faith crisis, post-Mormons, and women experiencing significant life transitions.

As part of a new series on Mormon Stories Podcast providing free coaching support to transitioning and post-Mormons, Margi will share her general approach to managing the emotional distress that often accompanies a religious faith crisis. Her framework will be based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which is a cutting-edge form of mindfulness-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to another edition of Mormon Stories podcast. I'm your host, Dr. John Dillin.

0:05.8

It's August 31st, 2021, and we are doing something that I think is really cool and exciting here on Mormon Stories podcast today.

0:15.0

So let me just give you a tiny bit of background. So a couple of years ago,

0:19.4

Margie and I in Natasha,

0:21.4

we're working as either therapist or coaches, trying to support people in the

0:25.9

post-warmen community, progressive Mormon community, trying to meet all the demand for coaching and therapy.

0:32.1

And we realized there's just no way we're ever going to meet all of the demand.

0:35.5

Our caseloads were full. We had huge waiting lists, and we realized it is just not good that so many people need help,

0:42.3

and we're not able to stretch to meet all the need. And so we decided to just create a podcast called the gift of the Mormon Faith Crisis podcast,

0:50.1

where we would share, I don't know, 50, 60, 70 hours of our best stuff,

0:54.6

so that people who couldn't wait in line who needed help now,

0:58.8

or even people that couldn't afford a coach or therapist could just get all the support they needed.

1:04.2

So we did that. We ran that project for about a year.

1:06.9

If right now you go to MormonFaithcrisis.com, click on it.

1:11.2

You'll see 70 hours of free coaching with some of the most important topics that you could ever want or need in a faith crisis.

1:19.5

Things like how to come out to believing family and friends,

1:22.6

how to communicate with believing family and friends, how to not ruin your relationships,

1:26.7

how to come out to your kids, your believing kids after faith crisis,

1:30.8

how to deal with your bishop and your church leadership,

1:33.3

you know, healthy grieving, how to manage your anger, healthy sexuality, how to improve your marriage,

1:39.0

so many really important and valuable episodes that you can just access right now in audio or video form,

1:46.2

and we did that for a while. There were a couple of problems with it.
