Summary

Welcome to The On Preaching Podcast, the podcast dedicated to helping you preach faithfully, clearly, and better.

In this episode, H.B. discusses the priority of and the preparation for the pastoral prayer. The Pastoral prayer should be simple, direct, God-centered, scriptural, corporate, and spiritually focused.

The A-C-T-S outline (adoration, confession, thanksgiving, & supplication) serves as a good model for structuring your pastoral prayer. As you make supplications, you should pray for the government, the gospel, the lost, the church, and the afflicted.

Good day and thanks for listening to the podcast.

In this episode, I want to talk to you about the pastoral prayer.

In the previous episode, specifically episode 139, we discussed what I believe is a primary element of corporate worship that the pastor teacher should take careful regard to oversee, namely the

this episode a companion or a sequel to that episode. I think the pastor, teacher should give

1:03.3

leadership to the public reading of Scripture. And I think that we should give leadership to the pastoral prayer.

1:13.7

If one asks me, what do you do for a living?

1:19.4

And I tell them I'm a pastor, and they ask further, tell me what that means?

1:25.5

What is it that you actually do as a pastor? I would summarize what I

1:32.8

understand pastoral work to be with the words of the apostles in Acts chapter 6 verse 4.

1:39.4

We will devote ourselves to prayer and the ministry of the word. Of course, there is a long laundry list

1:47.7

of many other things the pastor must do in serving and leading the congregation that God has called

1:56.7

him to. But essential to them all is our devotion to prayer and to the ministry of the word.

2:07.1

The preacher's work, the pastor's work, should be rooted in biblical preaching and believing prayer.

2:19.5

In fact, if you would summarize the public ministry of the pastor, it involves, I believe, music, prayer, and preaching.

2:32.3

And I think these are three key areas related to the ministry of the word.

2:39.9

Music is more than music. It is an extension of the ministry of the word. And of course, we are

2:47.0

charged to preach the word and to be ready to do so in season and out of season.

2:52.1

And what I want to add to our discussion today is that coupled with the core work of

2:59.7

pastoral ministry, if you're going to take your, take preaching seriously on the Lord today,
