Most human relationships are built on the condition of "you don't upset my ego and I won't upset yours." When the ego is triggered, it goes into a state of panic because it feels like it's losing power and control. By practicing meditation and self-awareness, you can begin to calm the ego's impulsive desires. It's like training a dog to not jump on people. With some discipline, you won't be so reactive to people and life.
