Summary

"Take assessment of who you feel more comfortable making eye contact with."

Carolyn Su is the creator of the @diversewerun Instagram account, where she shares inspiring stories from runners from all backgrounds. Carolyn, who is a Taiwanese-American daughter of immigrant parents and was born and raised in Texas, is a strong voice advocating for more diversity and representation within the running community. On this episode, Carolyn — who is a mom of two living with her husband and kids in Boston, MA — talks about her foray into running and how having an eating disorder in high school and college factored into her running journey. She also talks about how we can all advocate for more diversity and inclusion within the running community. A must-listen!

This episode of The Alley on the Run Show is brought to you by Aftershocks.

Welcome to The Alley on the Run Show. I'm Allie Fellerin, I'm your host.

0:12.4

I'm a freelance writer and editor, a runner, and a new mom to six-month-old Annie.

0:17.6

Every week on The Alley on the Run Show, I talk with inspiring men and women who lead

0:21.7

interesting lives on the run and beyond. And while running is what brings us all together,

0:26.7

on these episodes, I'm looking for more. So join me every week to learn about the decisions

0:32.2

people have made to get where they are today, the good ones and the bad ones, and how getting

0:36.8

sweaty has factored in. The day I launched The Alley on the Run Show, I knew I wanted this to be a

0:42.1

place where people could come listen to stories from runners and feel inspired, motivated,

0:46.5

and connected to this running community. I wanted to make sure the lineup was interesting,

0:51.5

open-minded, and diverse, and I wanted these conversations to empower people in some way.

0:57.2

And yes, I feel confident that the motivation and inspiration have always been there.

1:02.5

But the diversity factor I realized was lacking. Yes, the stories were diverse,

1:07.9

but to glance at The Alley on the Run Show lineup was to glance at a long list of,

1:12.4

yes, amazing and inspiring, but let's be honest, a lot of white women. The diversity I committed

1:18.8

to really early on just wasn't there. That's on me. One listener, Carolyn Sue, posted something

1:25.5

on Instagram stories after The Boston Marathon Live Show. She was at the show, she was smiling at

1:30.7

us from the second row right behind my family, actually, and she mentioned she couldn't help but

1:35.4

notice that both the panel itself and the crowd were really homogenous-looking. I responded to

1:41.5

Carolyn's post and we ended up having a really great, really eye-opening to me conversation.

1:46.9

I asked her if we could expand on what we talked about over Instagram, here on The Alley on the

1:51.8

Run Show. She agreed and I'm so, so, so excited to get to share this conversation with Carolyn Sue,
