Listener, what do you refer to the night of October 30th in your neck of the woods?

If you live near the Cincinnati, Ohio area, you may know this date as cabbage night. The night is celebrated based on

Scottish traditions. Unwed women and girls would often pull cabbages to

examine the stalks in an attempt to determine their future husband's weight.

After using the cabbage as a means of fortune telling, the young women would then take the

cabbages and throw them at the homes of their neighbors.

Rodding cabbages are also traditionally used as a means to light roaring neighborhood

bonfires.

In New Hampshire, and some parts of Canada, you may have heard of this night being referred to as Gate Night.

On Gate Night, teenagers and young adults would often unlatch the gates to livestock pens, allowing the farmers, animals to roam free.

People in Detroit, Michigan know the night as Devil's Night.

Detroit firefighters are bracing for Devil's Night. That's the annual

pre-Hallewene arson spree. Last year 281 blazes were reported. City

officials are taking steps to try and stop the fires.

Views under the age of 18 will be under a dusk to dawn curfew tonight,

and more than 35,000 volunteers will watch vacant buildings and patrol

neighborhoods with fire extinguishers.
