This is hell today's protests against racialized police brutality

in the United States are completely unprecedented.

Never before in the history of this country as the public rose up against what they saw

is systemic, even institutional racialized violence perpetuated by law enforcement.

That is, unless you count the uprisings

against racialized police violence

that occurred in the late 1950s

that continued to the early 60s and exploded in the uprisings that took place across. the late

summer of 1967. Yes, the so-called riots of

1967 were very much fueled by ongoing police violence

that was getting worse and worse as the civil rights movement gained more and more

steam and power. Police like those in Detroit had essentially been given a license to kill

anyone they suspected of having been involved in a crime and was fleeing the

scene armed or not without any evidence of them actually being involved in that crime or not. This meant that a lot of especially young black men were being

often shot the unarmed fleeing suspect in the back. A suspect it was later determined was not actually

involved in any crime whatsoever. And the police were able to do it with impunity without any fear
