0:00.0 | Okay. What's up everybody? It's D.G. I'm here solo. And this is my fault. DC and I had this on the calendar three separate times this week. |
0:23.5 | And somehow we didn't make it happen. |
0:26.1 | And now our schedules are all mixed up. |
0:28.4 | And so I figured I'm going to break the rules and do a seeking wisdom with just me. |
0:33.9 | I hope that'll be okay. |
0:34.7 | Because what I want to talk about today is I actually want to talk about DC because we talk so much about learning on this podcast. And the number one question that I get |
0:44.3 | from people, I had this actually came up. I went for coffee with Sam on our sales team here last |
0:49.9 | week, Sam Boyd. Shout out to you, Sam Boyd. And he was like, DG, I have a question for you. I am a big seeking wisdom fan. I love, you know, hearing about all the books and learning and I totally get it, but I hate reading. So how do I actually go about reading? And I thought this would be a good topic for today because me, that's where I come from. I never read three years ago when I started, just about three years ago when I started at D.F. It was when I really got into books and into reading. And I learned a bunch of tricks from D.C. that have helped me read more, learn more, and just kind of really start to love learning and appreciate reading. And so I thought today on this episode of Seeking Wisdom, that's where I could break those three things down for you. |
1:28.3 | Obviously, we've got to follow the rule of three. So, number one, and I hope this stuff is helpful for even if you don't, like, even if you're already reading, I think these things can help you get a little bit more out of it and hopefully level up your learning. So number one thing, number one thing that I learned from DC, and I don't want to blow his head up. |
1:27.7 | He's not here right now. |
1:28.8 | So let's not make this about him. Number one, I learned from this guy, okay, is read with a purpose. And so I used to, like, when I got into reading, I used to, okay, I'm in tech, I'm in SaaS. This is the world that I live in. And so I went and I got all these books about |
2:01.0 | SaaS metrics and VC funding and deals and all this other stuff that wasn't really that |
2:07.6 | interesting to me. And so as a result, I had a hard time actually going out and reading it. And when I |
2:12.8 | got to Drift, D.C. was like, look, put away all those other books. And here's what I want you to |
2:16.9 | focus on. Focus on copywriting, focus on all those other books, and here's what I want you to focus on. |
2:22.9 | Focus on copywriting, focus on advertising, and go out and find those books, right? |
2:28.5 | Find the books that are about classic marketing. So he put me on Ogilvy on advertising, |
2:33.6 | scientific advertising, all the classics, cash advertising, all these classic, the boron letters, |
2:34.3 | all these classic copywriting and advertising books. Because that's what I love. That's what I love doing. I love telling |
2:38.3 | stories. I love doing that piece of marketing. And so DC said, focus here. And so there's a really |
2:44.5 | important lesson there, which is from Peter Drucker's book, Managing oneself, which is focus on your |
2:49.4 | strengths instead of focusing on your weaknesses. And it |
