Summary

Five years years ago, upon completing my Psychology Ph.D., I began holding retreats and workshops to support Mormons in faith crisis, and specifically to help reduce anxiety, depression, suicidality, family strife, and unnecessary divorce for those experiencing a Mormon Faith Crisis.  For many of these workshops and retreats, I was fortunate to co-present with Natasha Helfer Parker and Margi Dehlin.

In August of 2019 we decided to hold a weekend retreat and record the entire experience ,including the attendee participation.  This is that retreat, which was held from 8/30 to 9/1/2019 in Salt Lake City, Utah. 40 audience members participated.  The following topics were addressed:

  • Understanding and Navigating a Religious Transition
  • Fundamentals of Mental Health in a Religious Transition
  • The Key to Healthy Relationships: Emotional Intimacy
  • Healthy Sexuality After a Faith Transition
  • Conscious Parenting
  • Communicating with Believing Family and Friends

We hope you enjoy this content.  It is the best insight we can share to help you navigate your religious transition.

Finally, a HUGE thanks goes to Clint and Jeni Martin for underwriting this event.

The next thing we kind of really want to tackle are some fundamentals of mental health

0:15.8

in a religious tradition because you know you'll see when we talk about intimacy in relationships

0:21.7

later that if you're not healthy as an individual you can't have healthy relationships with

0:28.6

other people. So so many of you are here because you're like how do I raise kids after a

0:35.1

faith transition? How do I keep my marriage together after a faith tradition? How do I communicate

0:39.4

with believing family and friends after a faith tradition? How do you care about those things? Well

0:44.2

guess what? If you're not healthy then you're starting with flat tires right and you're not going

0:50.5

to drive anywhere. So this first session lays the foundation for all those other sessions. Is that

0:56.3

all right? That's why it's next. Now we're not advancing this all is truth but this is our best

1:03.8

collected wisdom for some just tools for mental health and I want to give credit because I believe

1:09.8

in giving credit. This presentation comes at least from three main sources. So I read a book called

1:17.7

A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle 12 years ago that got me interested in secular Buddhism. So there's

1:27.3

an underpinning there. Then when I was trained in my psychology PhD clinical and counseling psychology

1:35.4

I was trained in a form of psychotherapy called acceptance and commitment therapy or act.

1:42.2

An act is literally secular Buddhism woven into cognitive behavioral therapy. And so again it's

1:50.2

sort of secular Buddhist informed psychotherapy. So that's the main framing for today's presentation

1:59.1

and then a third influence this this presentation is heavily influenced by the work of Naurasheda

2:05.9

and his secular Buddhism podcast. Naur is a former warmest stories listener. We did workshops together

2:14.2

and several of these slides come directly from Naurasheda's work. So if you really want the

2:19.0

source of the goodness read a new earth and listen to the secular Buddhism podcast with Naurasheda.

2:27.8

And you know some of our stuff is thrown in. So we're want to answer the question. Where do

2:35.4

we talked about this at the break? Where does situational depression come from?
