Summary

Macron's Political Crisis and the Rise of the National Rally Joseph Sternberg, Wall Street Journal, with John Batchelor Sternberg explains that President Macron's political turmoil stems from his determination to avoid new elections, fearing defeat by Marine Le Pen's National Rally. Macron's reform agenda failed because he was perceived as an urban elite disconnected from voters and lacked a cohesive free-market vision. Sternberg also addresses Prince Andrew, noting his lack of accountability regarding his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein makes him a permanent liability for the monarchy.

I'm John Batchel with my good colleague Joseph Sternberg. Both of us observing a melodrama in London and in the British media.

It is entirely hard to understand because we don't know how many titles a man named Andrew has to give up in order to satisfy the demands of both his family,

0:22.5

the Royal Family, and the media in London. However, right now he remains Prince Andrew.

0:29.1

The reason I bring it up is because his disgrace is wound up in the unfinished story,

0:41.5

the mystery of a man named Epstein. And I don't see the British making much of this, but it is a puzzle that America is the author of what is taking

0:48.4

down the crown in respectability. From your point of view, Joe, because you consume the news in

0:54.1

London, is Andrew unacceptable

0:56.9

permanently?

The prodigal son eventually came home and begged forgiveness.

1:02.1

Is that possible?

1:03.7

Well, I think it's going to be a very difficult road.

I mean, the development that we're talking about over the past week as the Prince Andrew was

1:12.5

encouraged to relinquish his various royal titles, including his title of Duke of York. So, I mean,

1:19.0

he has still a prince as a result of an obscure law from early in the 20th century, but is losing out on

1:26.8

other titles. And the reason is the continuing problem of news that keeps leaking out about the nature of his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and various allegations arising from that, which he always denies.

1:43.3

But I think that, you know, with an institution like

1:46.6

the monarchy, they are aware that they have to be cognizant of public opinion. And King Charles

1:52.4

and Prince of Wales, Prince William, appear to have decided that this is becoming too much of a

1:59.3

liability for the family. And so they need to try to

2:02.4

de-emphasize Andrew's public role. And I think that one of the difficulties here is that

2:08.3

Andrew seems not always to have been willing to do that and may not fully understand the depth

2:16.5

of the public relations scandal.
