Summary

Five years years ago, upon completing my Psychology Ph.D., I began holding retreats and workshops to support Mormons in faith crisis, and specifically to help reduce anxiety, depression, suicidality, family strife, and unnecessary divorce for those experiencing a Mormon Faith Crisis.  For many of these workshops and retreats, I was fortunate to co-present with Natasha Helfer Parker and Margi Dehlin.

In August of 2019 we decided to hold a weekend retreat and record the entire experience ,including the attendee participation.  This is that retreat, which was held from 8/30 to 9/1/2019 in Salt Lake City, Utah. 40 audience members participated.  The following topics were addressed:

  • Understanding and Navigating a Religious Transition
  • Fundamentals of Mental Health in a Religious Transition
  • The Key to Healthy Relationships: Emotional Intimacy
  • Healthy Sexuality After a Faith Transition
  • Conscious Parenting
  • Communicating with Believing Family and Friends

We hope you enjoy this content.  It is the best insight we can share to help you navigate your religious transition.

Finally, a HUGE thanks goes to Clint and Jeni Martin for underwriting this event.

Well, welcome to our first presentation of this, you know, the gift of the Mormon faith crisis,

0:14.6

slash thrive retreat. The presentation that Natasha and I have been starting off with for four

0:22.8

years now, 40 plus presentations is a presentation around understanding and navigating or religious

0:29.7

transition. So this presentation is to help you orient where you've been, where you are, and where

0:38.0

you're going. Okay? It's not meant to be the gospel, but I think it does a good job of helping

0:44.8

orient you. So it's kind of like a road map. Is that all right? Okay. The main thing I, we want to

0:52.6

get across in this presentation is that a faith crisis is not some terrible personal, awful,

1:00.2

horrible thing that has happened to you as a victim. Okay? What we want to convey in this

1:08.4

presentation is that you're going through a universal experience that life intended you, and I

1:17.2

would even argue that religion intended you to go through. So you're not victims. I loved what

1:24.2

was said yesterday about, or maybe it was on a podcast I was listening to, where the victim stance

1:29.9

is the weakest stance. Like, there are victims in the world. We've all been victims, but you don't

1:35.5

want to assume the stance of a victim as your approach to life. You want to approach life as an

1:42.0

empowered, informed, powerful human being. And the way to do that is to move from a place of

1:48.4

victimhood to a place of empowerment. And that's kind of what this presentation is intended to do.

1:55.1

And what to add to this is that it's hugely developmental, and we are ongoingly developmental

2:01.1

creatures. We know a lot about development until the age of like 15, 16 as a lay audience,

2:06.9

but development continues into adulthood. So your 20s have certain developmental steps. Your 30s

2:12.0

have certain developmental steps. It doesn't escape my notice that most of the people we work with are

2:17.6

somewhat in the midlife arena. And so that's a very huge part of your developmental journey is to

2:23.5

start questioning where you come from. That's a normal thing to be doing. I also want to just say that

2:29.2

this whole presentation comes from a social science hat. So we are not here talking about religion,
