The Biden administration has pushed back

after three European countries said

they plan to recognize a Palestinian state.

Leaders of Ireland, Spain and Norway,

announced the move this morning, leading Israel to recall its ambassadors from their countries.

A US National Security Council spokesperson said that while President Joe Biden supports a two-state solution,

he thinks it should happen through negotiations,

not, quote, unilateral recognition.

This comes as we've learned why ceasefire and hostage release

negotiations between Israel and Hamas broke down earlier this month.

CNN's Alex Marquardt has more.

Egyptian intelligence quietly changed the terms of a proposal that Israel had already signed off on earlier, but Egypt

didn't think that Hamas would go for the terms and work to change some of them.

A proposal was then given by Egypt to Hamas without the awareness of Israel or the other mediators, but which Hamas agreed to.

The deal reportedly fell apart when both sides realized they'd agreed to different things.
