President Joe Biden is expected to unveil later today a sweeping executive action that protects certain undocumented immigrants from being deported.

A senior administration official says this new legal status and protection would apply to spouses

of U.S. citizens and their children if they're under the age of 21, impacting

around 550,000 people.

It's the largest relief program for undocumented immigrants since President Barack Obama's

DACA program,

which was unveiled 12 years ago this month.

The new policy means eligible non-citizen spouses

don't have to leave the US to apply for a green card,

which would allow them to work legally in the country.

It's also meant to appeal to key Latino constituencies in battleground states, like Arizona,

Nevada, and Georgia, and serve as a stark contrast with former President Donald Trump.

Former Trump administration official Matt Maowers says this is bad politics and bad policy right now.

The truth is that in order to stop the flow of illegal migration, you have to stop offering incentives to folks

to actually come to the United States in the first place.

Wildfires have forced thousands of people

to flee their homes in California and New Mexico.
