Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is resigning as the Liberal Party's leader, but will remain Prime Minister until a replacement is chosen.

I will always be motivated by what is in the best interest of Canadians.

Trudeau's announcement comes as he faces a mounting set of crises,

from President-elect Donald Trump's tariff threats to the resignation of key allies.

And it leaves his party without a leader with just months to go before the country's general election,

which he was widely expected to lose.

This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that

if I'm having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election.

Trudeau has been Canada's prime minister for nine years and was most recently re-elected in

2021, but lost his governing majority.

Since then, the opposing Conservative Party has been ahead in national polling averages by more than 20%. A huge and deadly winter storm is causing problems with flights, delaying the start of school,

and causing dangerous driving conditions across parts of the U.S.

Several governors have declared states of emergency, from the Ohio Valley to the Mid-Atlantic,

including Andy Bashir in Kentucky.

He says the storm has already brought half an inch of ice, which has caused road accidents

and stranded motorists, as well as cutting out power for tens of thousands of people in the state.
