I'm Krista Bow with The Five Things You Need to Know for Friday, January 17th.

The Supreme Court has cleared the way for TikTok to be banned in the U.S.

So what's next for the app?

That's what I asked CNN's Claire Duffy.

Yeah, Krista, major loss for TikTok today after months of fighting this ban in court.

The Supreme Court upheld the divest or ban law,

citing Congress's national security

concerns and TikTok's extensive user data collection. That means the ban is officially set to go

into effect on Sunday. But it's still not totally clear what that will mean for TikTok's 170 million

American users. The Biden White House has signaled it will leave it to the incoming Trump administration

to enforce the ban.

And that means there may be no one to explicitly direct U.S. app stores to remove TikTok on Sunday.

Still, TikTok is reportedly considering taking the app offline in the U.S. itself on Sunday,

which could give it some leverage in the form of unhappy users as it tries to work out a deal with Trump, who

has said he wants to save the app.
