I was in my little sublet apartment in New York City after having wasted the last 10 years of my life and sort of at the bottom of the barrel.

And I was in one of those states of mind where you want to do drugs or you want to chase women or you want to do anything to get out of it.

And instead I turned around to this typewriter or typewriter just like it.

And I hadn't written in like 10 years, 70 or something like that.

And I said, let me just sit down.

I know it's stupid.

I know I'm not going to do anything worth of shit.

Let me just try it.

I rolled a piece of paper in and I typed for like,

maybe a couple of hours.

When I was doing it was totally worthless, just words on paper, I threw it away and I went back into the kitchen

to wash some dishes because there was a big pile of dishes in the sink, and I realized as I was washing the dishes that I was whistling.

And I knew then that I was okay, and I felt like, ah, the fact that I had sat down at the typewriter for two hours, even though I didn't produce anything worth of shit, and I wouldn't, I could tell for like another 20 years, I wouldn't, but I felt like, ah, I found something.

And that was sort of the moment for me when I felt like,

okay, I'm going to be all right.

It may take me 30 years, but I found what I'm supposed to be doing
