Summary
This episode is a backgrounder, an overview of the Puritan society, culture, and economy in New England during the seventeenth century. The objective is to set all y’all listeners up for more traditional and detailed “timeline” episodes over the coming weeks. Sort of a mega-prerequisite. We therefore discuss Puritan religious “conformity” within the context of the early 1600s, families, religion, property rights, the structure of the New England economy, and its relationship with the outside world. Oh. And the importance of beer and cake when Puritan mothers gave birth to cute little Puritan babies.

| 0:00.0 | Welcome to the History of the Americans podcast episode 104. |
| 0:10.9 | I'm your host, Jack Heneman, and I'm recording this episode on January 28, 23, in my bedroom closet in New Orleans. |
| 0:21.2 | We are telling the history of the lands now encompassed by the United States from the beginning without presentism. |
| 0:29.0 | Okay. |
| 0:30.3 | It's become clear that I'm no longer even close to putting out new episodes on a regular schedule. |
| 0:37.0 | For the first year and a half of this podcast, |
| 0:39.3 | it was pretty good about getting episodes out more or less |
| 0:42.1 | between Thursday night and Saturday morning. |
| 0:45.4 | And I had hoped to resume doing that, |
| 0:47.9 | since everybody says that podcasts should come out on a regular schedule. |
| 0:52.5 | Alas, my travel schedule has been very hectic and will continue to be. |
| 0:57.2 | So for now, I'm going to throw in the towel and just put out episodes as I finish them. |
| 1:02.5 | I still hope to do three or four a month, but consider that a more or less subjective. |
| 1:09.5 | I also want to say again how much I appreciate your emails, |
| 1:14.5 | reviews on Apple, and promotion on Twitter. And not just the pats on the back, although they are |
| 1:21.1 | very much appreciated. The corrections are very important. And I try to confess to errors and |
| 1:27.4 | correct them in a ratta notes |
| 1:28.8 | when I get something wrong, or you disagree with my emphasis, as it were. So thank you. |
| 1:36.3 | This episode's a bit of a departure from the usual fare for this podcast, sort of a context |
| 1:42.8 | setter or backgrounder rather than a detailed look at any point in time. |
| 1:47.8 | The plan here is to get a bunch of ideas and themes out there, so the following episodes more |
| 1:53.8 | obviously fit together. Fortunately, for me, Alan Taylor, one of the great historians of early America, wrote a very interesting introduction to the Puritans in his book, American Colonies, The Settling of North America. |
