Summary

This topic is so important and yet so rarely discussed. That’s why I’m so appreciative that Holly Grigg-Spall has joined me this week to discuss the contraceptive pill. The Pill has long been associated with sexual freedom and liberation, but Holly talks us through her journey of discovering the impact that it had upon her mental and physical health. In doing so, Holly walks us through the research that is often overlooked and the various reasons we avoid having these conversations. I’m so honoured to have this discussion because I know it is so important that this topic is brought to light. Hello and welcome to the Mark Grove's podcast. I am so excited to be chatting with you this week about a

0:06.6

subject that we don't often correlate to the influence it may have on our relationship.

0:14.9

You know, we might in a small way think about the influence it might have on the physical and mental

0:20.4

health of the person taking the product,

0:22.4

but we don't necessarily correlate it to the other influences it may have relationally, and that is the birth control pill.

0:30.5

I've been for a long time fascinated about hormones in general, but how a product like the birth control pill and how it works,

0:40.7

how it can't just be that it, you know, you just get this benefit where you don't, you know,

0:47.1

you're no longer as concerned about having a baby.

0:51.4

There has to be, to me, nothing is free.

0:55.8

There's always something that is the cost of that. That's because human systems are perfect in that, sorry, systems on

1:02.4

the planet are perfect. You cannot alter one part of a system without altering something else.

1:08.6

I wanted to have this conversation because, one, I'm a man and I can't have this

1:13.3

conversation on my own, let's be honest. I needed someone who had an in-depth knowledge about it,

1:19.0

had been experienced, had had experience with it, and all the different areas of research to look

1:25.2

at this story around the birth control pill. And we go into so much

1:31.8

depth on the subject, which I'm so excited for you to hear about, because I've long been so

1:38.2

curious about this subject and its effect on fertility once the woman comes off of it and how does it affect

1:45.6

mental health and all those things. So I'm really, really pumped that I get to share this

1:50.4

interview with you this week with Holly Griggs-Ball and she wrote the book called Sweetening

1:56.6

the Pill. Before we get started with the episode, I wanted to make an ask of you if you could go to

2:05.7

wherever you listen to podcasts and subscribe to this and share it with your friends and also give it

2:14.2

a five-star review and a written review. That would be so incredibly helpful to get it into more people's ears.
