Now we continue our WNYC Centennial series, 100 Years of 100 Things.

Today it's thing number 40, 100 years of the United States as a global superpower.

It's a very relevant topic for right now as the second Trump administration takes shape

with an America First foreign policy, America First, as they call it,

that seeks to pull back from global leadership in certain ways

while still maintaining the world's most lethal military.

President-elect Trump talks about no more endless wars, pulling out of the Paris Climate Treaty,

NATO, and the World Health Organization.

But he also said this week that, quote,

America's enemies are on notice our military will be

great again and America will never back down quite a contrast from President Harry Truman in

1945 at the signing of the United Nations Charter if any nation would keep security itself, it must be ready and willing to share

security with all. That is the price which each nation will have to pay for world peace. Unless we

are all willing to pay that price, no organization for world peace can accomplish its purpose.

And what a reasonable price that is.
