stories of perseverance, positivity, and more. Now, here's Martha McCallum. My guest today, James

Smith served in World War II as a member of the First Marine Raider Battalion.

During his service, he was given the nickname Horse Collar because he would butt heads occasionally with his sergeant,

and as a result, sometimes had to carry a cart filled with guns and ammunition up the hill by the collar.

Jim was a Marine communicator and a rifleman.

He earned two silver stars for his valor during the battles of Toulagie in the Solomon Islands and the Bloody Ridge on the island of Guadalcanal. When talking about his

time in the service, Smith said, quote, some of the toughest men I knew had experienced the pressures

of war, but we could not fall apart. We could not afford it. We bit our

tongues, kept our heads down, and kept pushing forward. And that he did. Jim is celebrating his

100th birthday this week, and we're really honored to have him join us now with his untold story.

Very happy to be here. So, Jim, just hearing about the battles that you fought in, some of the most

consequential in the Pacific during World War II, what goes through your mind as you approach

100 years of age and you take yourself back to those days when you were much younger on Guadalcanal.
