0:46.1 | I came from very modest circumstances my parents were not college or high school graduates |
0:50.8 | I did get a scholarship to go to Duke and they lost school in Urshkago |
0:54.6 | But I was a lawyer not fairly good at it. I went through the work in the White House for President Carter |
0:58.8 | I wasn't that good at that either. I got inflation to 19% and we got clobbered in the election in 1980 |
1:03.7 | So I went back and basically decided to do something that I really wanted to do |
1:07.3 | Which is to build an investment firm in Washington DC got it and when and when you started that investment from the Carlisle group |
1:12.6 | It's now grown to you know $200 plus billion in assets |
1:15.8 | What was the strategy or what was kind of the vision for what did you want it to build? |
1:20.0 | Of course hindsight is always 2020 at the time. I just wanted to be able to pay the rent for the next month and be able to pay the to payroll |
1:27.2 | We started very small we had about 10 people and we had five million dollars |
1:30.8 | But we came up with a strategy that changed the private equity world |
1:33.8 | Which is to say we built a global firm and one that did things in many different private equity areas buyouts growth capital venture capital |
1:40.9 | So became an institutional firm and one of the largest in the private equity world |
