The 10 first women world leaders Leaders Through most of history and across the world, the leaders of most tribes, realms, and nations have been men.

But in the 1940s, the first woman in history rose to become a non-royal head of state. Since then, more and more women each decade have been taking political office and rising to the top jobs.

Today, we'll take a high-level look at the lives and careers of the first 10 women to be elected or appointed head of state,
