I have owned nine puppies and had many rescue dogs new to my home, and all have become amazing adult dogs. It might seem I was lucky, but the truth is that I followed a process! And there are things that I don’t do with my puppies or dogs when they come to live with me. I’m covering the 10 common mistakes that people make with a new puppy. Avoiding these 10 things that people do intentionally or inadvertently when they get a new puppy will set puppies up for success.
In the episode you'll hear:
• The 10 mistakes to avoid when your new puppy comes home.
• About the layers of the 5C Formula applied to puppy raising for confidence.
• How clarity for me starts with a puppy learning how to be excited and how to be calm.
• That you have permission to go shopping before your puppy arrives.
• Why to decide the method of training you want to use with intention.
• About having realistic expectations because puppies are babies.
• How to create an environment to set a puppy up for success and confidence.
• The importance of keeping your slippery floors covered so puppy does not slide.
• Why to avoid indoor pee pads if you want your puppy to potty outside.
• About the appropriate timing of socializing puppies.
• How an overtired puppy is cranky, overstimulated, and needs sleep.
• Why I encourage you to have your new puppy sleep in the bedroom at night.
• A bonus tip to prevent counter surfing and scavenging from the get-go.

0:13.2 | themselves. Was I lucky? No, I followed a process. And equally important as following a process, |
0:19.7 | I avoided doing certain things with my puppy. |
0:23.1 | And that is what I'm going to talk about on today's podcast. Things I absolutely don't do that a lot of |
0:29.0 | other people might do with their new puppy. I'm Susan Garrett. |
0:42.7 | Welcome to Shape by Dog. |
0:44.8 | And I've got 10 things I want to talk about that people will do either intentionally |
0:49.7 | or inadvertently the first day they get a puppy. |
0:53.0 | And these are things that I absolutely will avoid |
0:55.8 | doing when I get a new puppy. So, let's think about the goal. What we want is we want a confident |
1:02.5 | dog. We want a dog who's so bonded with us. They're part of the family. They're part of the team. |
1:07.9 | They do as we ask. Maybe we want to play a sport. Maybe we just |
1:11.1 | want a great companion to go hiking or go visiting family with. That's what we have in mind. |
1:16.8 | We have this goal. And so everything that I do with a puppy, I reflect back on what I've talked |
1:23.9 | about many times here on the podcast and that's my 5C formula. It starts |
1:28.2 | with connection. Well, who can't be connected with a puppy? I mean, they're cute. They're |
1:32.8 | amazing, right? So, connection and then clarity and then confidence. For me, that clarity starts |
1:41.3 | with the clarity of how to be excited and how to be calm. |
1:45.8 | That starts on day one and it just carries through with everything that we do. |
1:50.1 | So when I look at things that I do with my puppy, I ask myself, does this contribute to growing |
