Before I begin this week's episode I must amend my discussion of last week.

0:05.0

In episode 9 I proposed that Kandy Kause was daughter of Men Cowray and the wife of Shepsestrath

0:12.0

who took power through marriage to the princess and fathered a new line of rulers.

0:17.0

This, I now believe, is not wholly accurate.

0:21.0

In researching Shepseskaff and his successor Usherkaff, I came across some new scholarship

0:27.0

that has fundamentally altered my perception.

0:30.1

This scholar, Vivian G calendar of the University of Sydney, has advanced a very well-developed

0:36.0

and convincing theory that upends much of the scholarship I had originally read on this topic. Simply stated, we must now amend our argument thus.

0:45.8

Kenti Cowse was in fact not the daughter of Mencoure, but rather his sister and daughter instead of Kaffre, the second of the Giza pyramid builders. Shepseskaff and Usurkaff were her sons, both of whom came to the throne and earned for their mother the august title of

Moot Nessut Beattie, Nessutbeattie, or Mother of Two Kings of Upper and Lower Egypt. The Royal Mother wielded extensive power during her son's reign and was sufficiently

1:17.4

authoritative for a representation of her to bear the Royal Insignia and crowns.

1:23.0

Her title, Daughter of the God, refers to Caffray rather than Men Caure,

1:29.0

and the absence of any title referring to her as a royal wife makes much more sense when we allow for Shepsestaf

1:36.3

to be her son rather than husband.

1:39.8

This does not fundamentally alter our understanding of Egyptian woman in the period, simply our understanding

1:45.8

of one woman's rise to power.

1:48.8

Kenti Ka's authority was still exceptional and her presiding over the reign of two kings is testament to her impact on this period of transition between dynasties.

1:59.0

So there you have it, my first amendment to the series.

2:03.0

I won't edit the previous episode because I believe in owning my mistakes

2:08.0

and this probably will not be the last time I have to do so.

2:11.0

But we'll see.

2:12.0

Now let's get into episode 10, a temple to the sun. I mean. The Five generations of Snaferu's family line had sat on the throne in succession by the time the of the Kufu, the brothers Jeddefray and Kaffray, and finally into the keeping of Menkawre.
