Well, I mentioned it earlier. I was sad when I awoke to the news that Fernando Valenzuela had passed away at the

relatively young age of 63 years old on the heels of just before the playoff the Dodgers announcing that he had

stepped away from the Spanish broadcast of Dodger games to tend to his health.

Obviously this must have been something that moved very quickly unfortunately.

But the 10 year old me man, I remember watching Fernando and thinking I don't know how that dude gets people out. He's pudgy, unathletic. Nothing about him suggests that he's going to dominate people the way that he did. It's funny you go back and you look at the history of Fernando

when he was 19 years old. He just kind of showed up for the Dodgers one day in 1980 in in the minor leagues.

They had no intention of calling him up but there was a couple of injuries and he was so

overwhelmingly good at 19 in the minor leagues that they decided let's bring him up in relief let's see what he's got

here let's throw him out there so one of the reasons they did that was that he was

in San Antonio and he threw 35 consecutive shut out innings.

And so they were like, well, something about what he throws is undetectable to hitters.

Turns out it was a screwball.

That was his pitch.

He threw a screwball.

And the spin on that was odd.
