This is John Batchez speaking with Civitas scholar Will Hay at the Arizona State University

about a famous at the time revolutionary war painter John Trumbull of Connecticut, 1756 to 1834, I believe,

lived a long and fruitful life.

However, he traveled from the revolution

where he'd been in aid to George Washington in Boston

to train to be a painter of historical scenes,

trained with Benjamin West in London,

and married.

And here Will Hay, Professor Hay, describes the sad part of John Troubles' life.

He came from an extremely prosperous family.

His father was governor of Connecticut during the Revolution and was the only governor

who turned away from the king and toward the revolutionaries,

the founding fathers.

So John Trumbull's family was very prominent in Connecticut.

And yet, his wife, well, it's a sad story.

But again, this is not the metropolis of London with the art and culture, to which she had been accustomed.

And it's moving to an unfamiliar place that she found to be less friendly.
