Hello and welcome to this, the very first curmoed on film podcast.

I'm Mark Kermoeded and as the title of the

podcast hopefully tells you I'm going to be talking about films. Some time ago I

wrote a book called The Good The Bad and the Multiplex in which I asked what's the point of film critics what are film critics therefore and I argued that film critics aren't there to tell you what movies to see and what movies not to see in fact if you look at the end of your lists of critics

favorite films and box office smashes you realize pretty quickly that critics

don't have any effect on box office success. I mean why is it that everyone goes to see Transformers movies

and Pirates of the Caribbean's but critics end up championing foreign language

films and more art house fair. No, the point about film criticism is this. It

exists simply to talk about film criticism is this. It exists simply to talk about film and that's pretty much what this podcast is about.

It's me talking about film sometimes on my own, sometimes with some other people.

I'll hope to encourage you to see some films that I like,

but in the end it's absolutely up to you.

And I'll talk about some other films which I don't like,

which you may feel very differently about.
