Summary

The Isha Upanishad (Sanskrit: ईशोपनिषद्, IAST: Īśopaniṣad), also known as Shri Ishopanishad, Ishavasya Upanishad, or Vajasaneyi Samhita Upanishad, is one of the shortest Upanishads, embedded as the final chapter (adhyāya) of the Shukla Yajurveda. It is a Mukhya (primary, principal) Upanishad, and is known in two recensions, called Kanva (VSK) and Madhyandina (VSM). The Upanishad is a brief poem, consisting of 17 or 18 verses, depending on the recension.

It is classified as a "poetic Upanishad" along with Kena, Katha, Svetasvatara and Mundaka by Paul Deussen (1908).

If you see the number of Upanishads, they are

reported to be more than a thousand, though many are supposed to be lost now. But still,

But we generally study the major Upanishads.

0:45.3

This distinction between major Upanishad and minor Upanishads is not a traditional distinction.

It's just that Adi Shankaracharya, he selected 10, arguably 11 of the Upanishads

0:58.7

to write his famous commentaries on. And those Upanishads and his commentaries form the foundation

1:05.4

of the non-dual Vedantra tradition, the Adwaita Vedanthra tradition. Among those 10 Upanishads, I said arguably 11,

1:16.3

because sometimes Shwetāhāhāra Upanishad commentary is also, as part of the tradition, is regarded as Shankarachari's

1:23.1

commentary. But anyway, 10 are well known. And in those 10, a prominent Upanishad is the Isha Upanishad.

1:30.3

We have actually a verse which gives us the names of those ten prominent or major Upanishads.

If you notice, we have done, we have studied some of them.

2:10.6

We started out with the Mandukhi Upanishad and Mandukya Karika long ago, if somebody remembers.

2:18.3

And then we went on to the Kāhā Upanishad, then we studied the Mundak Upanishad, then we studied

2:26.3

the Khen Upanishad, and now we are at the Isha Upanishad.
