I've been thinking a lot about a prison recently.

It's at the very edge of Louisiana,

in a meander of the Mississippi River,

a big sweeping bend that curbs about 12 kilometers.

The bank of the rivers are Bayou or Swampland,

and the region's known for crocodiles, crawfish,

and a slow pace.

The prison's an outpost in this precarious land.

When hurricanes come in, the levees can give way,

and before you know it, the whole area's underwater,

flooded with disease and fear.

To get there, you drive down Louisiana's Route 66.

This isn't the famous artery,

but a single track road with big cracks in it,

and it stops suddenly.

What looks like a crossroads is for most people,

just a dead end.

You need official authorization to go any further.
