Summary

In the 1930s, Saint Paul Minnesota was considered a vacation home for some of the most notorious bank-robbing gangsters of the Depression-era, including John Dillinger and the Barker-Karpis Gang. Host Erik Rivenes' guest, Paul Maccabee, wrote the definitive book on the subject, entitled "Dillinger Slept Here: A Crook's Tour of Crime and Corruption In St. Paul", and he shares some of those titillating stories here, on this first ever episode of Most Notorious: A True Crime History Podcast. This is a classic!

Hello, this is Eric Rivenes, creator and host of the most notorious podcast.

0:04.8

I'm adding this little note to the beginning of this very first episode of the podcast.

0:11.3

In March of 2018, 28 months after its original air date. I know that most of you listening

0:18.0

are probably new to this podcast. I always start with the first episode too, by the way.

0:23.6

I wanted to let you in on a couple of quick things. I started this podcast back then for selfish

0:29.1

reasons. I've been collecting true crime history books all of my adult life and figured this

0:35.2

would be an incredible way to meet the authors, many of whom have been idols of mine for a long time.

0:41.3

Secondly, this first episode certainly isn't perfect. Hopefully not too obvious, but I made some

0:47.2

rookie interview mistakes, like some over editing, and promising the theme to show with a couple

0:53.2

of stories each week connected by geography. I learned really quickly how hard that would be.

1:00.0

And oh yeah, there's the slight gangster accent, which always served me well in my old tour days,

1:06.4

but after a handful of episodes I realized it wasn't quite working in this kind of format.

1:10.8

Well anyway, that's all. Enjoy the show, and I appreciate tremendously

1:14.9

you choosing to listen to my show amongst all the choices out there, and there are a lot these days.

1:20.8

And by the way, for anyone interested in political true crime, I have a book called Dirty Duck Ames

1:27.1

and the Scandal that shook Minneapolis, published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press,

1:32.6

available on April 1st, 2018. Pick up a copy if you get a chance, some really fascinating,

1:38.9

wonderful characters, and one of the craziest stories of political corruption by a

1:44.8

mayor of a city you'll ever read about. Thanks again, cheers.

1:51.6

Most notorious contains adult themes. It is not suitable for all audiences.

1:57.4

Listener discretion is advised.

2:44.9

Thanks all for tuning into the first ever episode of the most notorious podcast.
