Hello, I'm Gary Stevens, and welcome to the History in the Bible podcast.

All the history, in all the books, in all the Bibles.

Thank you. Episode 1.25, Joshua Conquers Canaan.

In the last two episodes of the History in the Bible podcast, we saw what modern scholarship makes of the Patriarchs and Moses. Those stories recounted in the Torah, the Pentatechuk. Now we get back to the tale. We are at Joshua, the first

1:05.6

book in the Bible after the Pentateuch. In Jewish Bibles, it is the first book of the prophets.

1:13.4

Prophets starts with Joshua, then proceeds through judges, Samuel and kings.

historical writings.

2:02.1

That includes the Jewish former prophets, together with Chronicles, Ezra and Nehemiah.

2:09.0

Now that makes perfect sense, one neat library of historical books.

2:14.8

But to spoil the neat simplicity of this division, Christians added the book of Ruth

2:19.9

to the historical writings, following the practice of the Septuagint. Ruth is a short story

2:27.2

apparently set in the time of the judges, and adds nothing to the historical data. I'm with the Jews on this one.

2:35.9

Ruth should have been left back in the romance shelf of the Bible.

2:40.7

The book of Joshua is named after its hero, Yehoshua.

2:45.1

God is salvation, son of none.

2:48.3

For some unclear reason, Moses had changed his name from Hoshiah.
