Anatol Leven of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft has returned from his visit

to Keefe and to Parts Forward in the combat zone that would be Zapparizia.

Writing at the Nation magazine, observing a phenomena that has knitted together and at

the same time caused untold turmoil in Europe for the last several hundred years.

The phenomenon is nationalism and it's a very dangerous word because it has two edges

and it cuts both ways.

I begin in the summer of 2008.

In your essay, you identify a detail that was not available to me at the time of reporting.

That is the conflict between Georgia and the Russian Federation.

Vladimir Putin was in Beijing, is my memory, as were a number of world leaders.

That was the summer of the Olympics to celebrate it in the People's Republic of China.

And then all of a sudden we had these reports of gunfire and conflict in Georgia, especially

in two parts of Georgia, two provinces, Sothosetsia and Apkazia.

It was extremely confusing but I remember clearly it was identified that a man named

Sakhashvili was leading a brave resistance at the Russian invaders.

And Vladimir Putin had rushed home from Beijing to supervise the conflict.

You report that we did not have the full picture.

What do we understand now about the spark that started that conflict?
